Skip the growing
We've done the growing. You go straight to feeding.
Growing a starter from scratch with flour and water takes 7 to 14 days. It often goes wrong along the way, and you don't know why. This starter is already an active culture: with water and flour it comes back to life.
- No 7 to 14 days of growing
- Usually baking within 2 to 3 days
- Then a starter that lasts for years
How it works
From pouch to your first loaf
-
1Day 1
Crumble and mix
Crumble the starter into a clean jar and mix it with lukewarm water. Add flour and stir into a paste.
-
2Day 1 and 2
Let it bubble
Keep the jar at room temperature until you see bubbles. Then feed it every day with water and flour.
-
3After 4 to 8 hours
Check if it doubles
Does it clearly rise after a feed, to about double? Then it's ready to bake with.

Twice as high? Time to bake.
Feed your starter and watch what it does. If it clearly rises within 4 to 8 hours, to about double, it's ready for your bread.
- About doubled, within 4 to 8 hours of a feed
- Full of bubbles
- Smells fresh and slightly sour
In the oven or with your bread maker's sourdough program
Your starter works in the oven and in a bread maker with a sourdough program. The Fornello Supremo has 19 programs, and sourdough is one of them.

Questions about the starter
How much time does it take?+
Most people bake their first loaf within 2 to 3 days. After that you feed the starter every day with water and flour, which takes a few minutes. Not baking every day? Then it can go in the fridge and you feed it less often.
What if I accidentally kill it?+
A starter mainly needs regularity: water, flour and room temperature. Forget a feed once, and it usually gets going again after a few feeds. In doubt? Send us a message on WhatsApp.
Won't my bread be too sour?+
A starter that's ready smells fresh and slightly sour. Bake with it when it has just doubled, because a starter that sits too long gets more sour.
Can I use it in my bread maker?+
Yes, if your machine has a sourdough program. The Fornello Supremo has one.
How long does the starter keep?+
Store the pouch unopened, cool and dry. Once it's active and you feed it well, it lasts for years. Then you have your own everlasting starter.
Does it contain gluten?+
Yes. The starter is made from wheat flour and water, so it contains wheat and gluten. If you eat gluten-free, this starter isn't suitable for you.
How much bread can I bake with it?+
As long as you feed it, you can keep baking. You use part of it for your dough and feed the rest again. How much starter goes into a loaf is in the recipe.
What if it doesn't work?+
Then you're not on your own. Watch the how-to video again, or send us a message via WhatsApp or customer service. We'll help you figure out what's going on.
